Iraq: From My Classmate’s Eyes January 31, 2008

Joe Linhart graduated with me, Class of ’03. He signed up for the Army senior year and was trained and sent to war shortly thereafter. Here is an interested article on his year in Iraq that he wrote for 02138 (a Harvard-related magazine): http://www.02138mag.com/magazine/article/1676.html

One quote jumped out at me:

“People in any country have the same capacity for good and evil. Itโ€™s what makes us human. When the average Iraqi doesnโ€™t provide information about the terrorists, it is frustrating. Then again, who reports a gang-related shooting in Los Angeles or Newark or Detroit?”

I’ve heard a lot of people (including me) say, “I don’t understand why the ‘good Iraqis’ don’t just identify the ‘bad Iraqis.'” Putting it in the context of urban America, I can better understand there reluctance to aid.

Anyway, read the article. He wrote it like he and the reader were having a conversation over a beer. There is a lot of insight that you can only get from someone who is actually on the front line. I really appreciate his sharing his experience.

For me 2006 was a great year (check out my archives to the left if you are curious ๐Ÿ™‚ ). It was a year of beginnings: new school/career path, new girlfriend, new apartment – in a sense, a new life. I hope to build on these beginnings and have an even better 2007.

I wish the same for you all: may 2007 be a great year for each of you.

God bless.

James Brown

I was sad to hear James Brown, Godfather of Soul, passed Monday morning. I’ve loved his music as long as I can remember. I am glad that he left on top. RIP, James Brown.

Click on the picture above for a link to a blog that has collected some videos of James Brown from the information superhighway.

“James Brown, ladies and gentleman. James Brown!”

I’ve only been to Chicago a few times, but I’ve enjoyed the city each time. It’s definitely a city I would consider living in.

The Chi just got an extra point in it’s favor when I came across this post on a Chicago-lover’s blog (via Apartment Therapy) . Apparently, each year they dress up an L train with Christmas decorations and send it around different train lines. You can hop on the train, ride around the downtown loop, and get off where you got on. Sounds like fun Christmas spirit ๐Ÿ™‚

Cheers!

In my mom’s spare time she has been taking classes to perfect her radio voice for voiceover acting and commercials. Check out my mom’s spot advocating voter participation: Constance Marie.

I admire my mom for not settling for a boring life. She stays active – always with a fun activity planned: golf, acting/voice lessons, poetry.

Go Mom!

Check out this video. It’s a guy taking us on a one man trip through the evolution of dance. [insert Darwin joke] He does a pretty good job of capturing the top moves of each era (with a heavy emphasis on the late 80’s through 90’s ๐Ÿ™‚

Enjoy.
