Londontown March 24, 2008

A couple weekends ago I hopped a flight across the pond to London to visit Lisa, an LM friend who was working over there for a bit. We had a blast for the weekend.

Lisa was great hostess, having spent 6 months in London during college (We went by the Notre Dame campus, of course. She’s not a bashful alum by any means). I didn’t have a list of must-sees, but we ended up covering most of the touristy spots including Trafalgar Square, Parlament & Big Ben, Westminster Abby (though we didn’t go in), Buckingham Palace, London Tower and Tower Bridge (which were really fun – took a Yeoman Warder tour that explained a lot of tower history and we saw the crown jewels – stunning!), Shakespeare’s Globe Theater, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the London Eye and a glimpse at 10 Downing St.

We also did some unexpected things: We took a look in the National Gallery, which houses The Execution of Lady Jane Grey. It is amazing how the artist made her dress look so real. It seems like you could almost touch it. We stumbled on the Churchill Museum and War Rooms, which is the actual location of Churchill and Englandโ€™s WWII command center. We also, on a whim, decided to check out The Sound of Music. It was an amazing show (wonderful set design and excellent voices), and we got really good tickets last minute at one of the discount ticket windows. The set used a minimum amount of props to give the feeling of seamlessly transitioning through all the scenes in the movie. It was really engaging. (And, there was also a bit of cool engineering and mechanical motion involved ;)) Lisa’s church was also an unexpected surprise. Hillsong-London is held in a functioning theater, and they utilize all the lighting, sound, a full band and all. It was a refreshing experience (the music was great!).

An excellent weekend get away. Thanks again, Lisa, for schlepping me around.

What happens in Japan… March 14, 2007

…gets catalogued here on my blog ๐Ÿ™‚ (…well, most of it ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

Q inย Japan

As it stands I am still jetlagged from our Japan Trek over spring break. About 90 Wharton students (inc partners) and 11 organizers (all Wharton students as well) to a trip all around Japan. It was a truly amazing experience – like nothing I’ve experienced before.

I tried to jot some notes down about each day while I was over there. I’ll be posting those (after I fill in some more memories) in the next couple days. I also took a lot of pictures …until my camera broke!! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ My friends took a lot of good pictures though, so i will post links to my friends as well as my own pictures shortly as well.

It’s good to be back, but I miss Japan. You just might see some more posts from Japan one of these days soon ๐Ÿ˜‰

This Christmas I went home to hang out with Mom. We had a blast, and Santa was good to us both ๐Ÿ™‚

We spent 3 days opening gifts. I got a bunch of nice shirts, Capote on DVD, and some money (among other things). (Note: the sweater in the picture above is from Adrienne; we had Christmas early.) Mom got a bunch of stuff too. I was happy to get her a pink bluetooth headset to go with her new pink Razr and a DVD collection of some Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice works, including Cats, Joseph, and JCS, which she was very excited about.

So I was surfing the information super highway and came across Gizmag.
This site is full of things that make you go “What the… ?!” Here’s some of the cool stuff (click on the pics).

This suit is something like a predecessor to the APU’s in the Matrix:

If you’ve seen South Park, I don’t have to say anything about this one:

And now for the real Batmobile (I’ve got to say this car is kinda bangin’):

And a six-wheeled sports car …huh? Yeah, six wheels.:

…and I thought my camera was small because it fits into an Altoid’s tin…

And finally, Okwui’s next television, the world’s largest HD LED TV:

Thanksgiving ’06 (…time is a lime!) November 28, 2006

Adrienne and I had a great Thanksgiving in Philly.

It was a pretty simple meal: semi-home-cooked. We ordered a rotisserie chicken (turkey was too much to deal with) and some yams, which we dressed up with some marshmallows :). We whipped up some stuffing, green beans, and mashed potatoes; heated some baked macaroni (compliments of my mom – thanks! ๐Ÿ˜‰ ); made some gravy; and opened a can of cranberry sauce to finish it off. All in all, a pretty simple yet complete Thanksgiving meal. (…and yes, WE did do it all – I did more than just open the cranberry sauce! ๐Ÿ™‚ )

With all the food, we managed to stuff ourselves until our stomachs looked like Buddha statues. We had to let all of it digest for a bit before diving into the lemon cake.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

Matt and Molly are almost official grownups! They’ve completed 3 of
the 4 steps: married, got a good job, and they have a house!!! (now
you just need some kids to complete the picture ๐Ÿ˜‰

Their house is wonderful. I was out in NE visiting them a couple
weekends ago. One of the coolest things is the pool in the back. I
tend to see it as a pool with a house in the front yard ๐Ÿ™‚ The layout of the place is great – plenty of space. Matt even has his own room for a recording studio. It’s definitely a 30-year keeper house.

I had the distinct honor of being their first house guest. While I was out there several other friends rolled through for a bbq and pool party. We also took a trip to see the state capitol building.

Another great trip to the Midwest.

Thanks again, Matt and Molly for a fabulous time, and congrats on your new place.
